Chapter 5
Mark
She was a cutie, and she cut to the chase, away from the bullshit. I looked into her eyes. My blue ones meet her green. I looked at her small, curvy body and felt the excitement grow within me.
God she was hot.
âThis place is great.â I said, watching a squirrel run up a tree. Excitement shone in her eyes as she pointed out a raccoon that was peeking at us from behind a bush. Her face looked so alive. Damn, she genuinely cared for all of these creatures.
âI can help you save this place,â I heard myself saying.
Her gaze flew to my face, âHow?â
âI know you owe the bank money.â
Her face fell.
âI can help you pay off your debt.â
âWhatâs in it for you?â she was rightfully suspicious.
âBecome my fiancée.â
âWhat? Are you crazy?â She placed her hands on her hips. I felt warmth in my crotch, as my eyes drifted to them.
âCalm down and listen. Itâd be a fake engagement.â
She laughed, âNow I know you are crazy. Get the fuck out.â
âCarmen.â I touched her shoulder, âDonât let your stubbornness make you lose a place you care about. I need my dad to think that I had secured this land. You becoming my fiancée â a fake one â would make him believe that the land truly belonged to me, and heâd give me some breathing space. Iâll stop bugging you to sell and heâd get off my back.â
âMark, you are crazy.â
âTell you what, hereâs my plan. We donât have to have a fake engagement right away, but we have to pretend that weâre seeing each other. My brother said my dad will back off, if I have proof that Iâm working on winning you over. Iâll tell him that I talked to you and the two of us are seeing one another on a romantic level, and we can go from there. If I can show him that we can be boyfriend and girlfriend, Iâm sure that heâll leave us be,â I explained.
âIâm not just going to agree to be your girlfriend, just because of some harebrained scheme,â she snapped at me.
âYou donât have to. Iâm saying we can pretend. I lie and tell him that weâre seeing one another romantically, that youâre my girlfriend, and that Iâm working you over. We may need to get our stories straight, since heâs going to ask, but itâs the best answer Iâve got. I mean . . . I like you, Carmen. Youâre interesting, and this place is too nice to ruin. I donât want to do what my brother and sister want. Iâm currently doing it, mostly to get them off my back,â I explained to her.
I wanted to be honest about this, but I knew she was already hesitant. She looked at me with concern on her face.
âWhy should I do it?â
âIf you do this, Iâll have the time to pay off your debt. Weâll have to pretend for long enough that my father believes our story. Thatâs pretty much my idea,â I explained.
